Lupe Fiasco's Latest Single, 'Hip-Hop Saved My Life,' Honors Southern Rap Heroes Bun B, Slim Thug
11th April 2008

He's a backpack rapper with a penchant for flashy items and a knack for forgetting A Tribe Called Quest lyrics at the wrong time.

But Lupe Fiasco's recent single, "Hip-Hop Saved My Life," is as endearing a record as any MC could put together.

The song is from his sophomore set, The Cool.

And he's dedicated it not to one, but two of the game's finest: Bun B and Slim Thug.

"With 'Hip-Hop Saved My Life,' I attempted to make 'Kick, Push,' but for rappers," he explained to MTV Base. "To give a real basic play-by-play of the life of a rapper before he makes it — if he ever makes it, because you can get stuck in that and be trying to make it for the rest of your life."

The genesis of the track came when the Chicago lyricist went to Houston for a show. The rapper said the town was "spaced-out," in terms of the distance between things, and it gave the city a feel as if there wasn't much to do. So UGK legend Bun B picked up Lupe and led him on a tour of H-Town.

"He had his wife Queenie with him, and I was just sitting back, soaking it all in, and I was just thinking, 'How can I pay Bun B back?' " Lupe recalled.

The result was "Hip-Hop Saved My Life." The track is a three-part narrative following a rapper putting together a track from scratch, going through the struggles of performing at open-mic sessions, then hearing a freestyle of his make it on the radio.

When Lupe filmed the video in Houston, Slim Thug — who makes a cameo in the clip — approached the MC and asked if the song was about him.

"My DJ first heard the record when Lupe's album came out," Slim Thug told MTV News. "I went on iTunes and bought it and was surprised it had a lot to do about me. I don't think it's entirely about me, but he took pieces of my hustle and put it in the song. We might not have the same type of rap style, but I respect him. I knew a lot of people that liked him when he first came out and checked him out, and he was jammin'. And anyone that's jammin' is all right with me. When he came to shoot the video, I got the call from Dr. Teeth, who directed it, and I was down. I brought some of my cars, you know, with the candy paint, and we did it."

"It is based on Slim Thug," Lupe revealed. "I was with him when we shot the video, and he was like, 'Yo, is this song about me?' I didn't know at the time, but there was a situation in Houston where they were trying to figure out who the song was about. Was it about Slim Thug? Was it about Chamillionaire? And it was about Slim Thug, but [then] I dedicated the song to Bun. I called him up and said, 'Yo, Bun, I've got a song for you, check it out,' and he was the first person to hear it. I sent it to him and he was like, 'Yo, it's all good.' "
Pharrell, Lupe and Kanye Tote Their Guns on This Tee!
3rd April 2008

For those of you who have been living under a rock CRS is a supergroup comprised of Lupe Fiasco, Pharrell Williams and Kanye West. So far the crew only has one song under their belt (“US Placers”) but that hasn’t slowed down the t-shirt creating fans apparently.

When I caught up with Lupe back in December this is what he had to say about CRS:

"We’re one song deep, a lot of ideas, a lot of conversations about how we want to roll out and what we want it to look like, what we want it to feel like. So we're in discussion right now but hopefully end of 08, we'll have something proper."

Lupe, Kanye & Pharrell set for supergroup?
31st March 2008

Rapper Lupe Fiasco has hinted that he plans to set up a hip-hop supergroup with Kanye West and Pharrell Williams.

According to The Mirror, the rapper spoke about the possible collaboration at the BBC 1Xtra gig in Coventry this week.

He said: "We're going to call ourselves CRS - but I can't tell you yet what it stands for."

Kanye West previously hinted that he would like to work with Lupe Fiasco ahead of his summer tour.
Bun B Drafts Lil' Wayne & Lupe Fiasco For New LP!
29th February 2008

Southern rap legend Bun B of UGK will release his second solo album, II Trill, on April 29 and he'll be criss-crossing the country for a national tour which starts today.

The record serves as the follow-up to his 2005 debut, Trill, which nabbed the No. 1 spot on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

The disc features guest spots from the late Pimp C, Lupe Fiasco, Lil' Wayne, 8Ball and MJG, David Banner, Rick Ross, Z-Ro, Mya, Mike Jones, Junior Reid, Webbie, Chamillionaire, Expensive Taste (Paul Wall, Skinhead Rob, & Travis Barker) and Slim Thug. Producers include Scott Storch, Jazze Pha, Clinton Sparks and JR Rotem, among others.

Bun's lead single will be "That's Gangsta" featuring pop-reggae sensation Sean Kingston and produced by Rotem.

In December Bun B faced the death of Pimp C, his close friend and partner in rhyme, due to complications from sleep apnea as well as an accidental overdose of prescipription-strength codeine, one of the main ingredients found in the popular illegal beverage "Sizzurp." In the wake of Pimp C's death, Bun B said he would likely ban the syrup talk on his new CD.

"My new album of course probably won't have any references to cough syrup in it," he said.
Lupe Fiasco Elaborates On Retirement, "This Game Wears On You"!
20th January 2008

Lupe Fiasco is only two albums deep into his budding rap career, but he continues to talk of retirement plans after his next album.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the eclectic Chi-town rapper says there is an 85 percent chance that his next CD, tentatively titled LupEND, will be his last.

"This game wears on you. It tears you down," he said. "It’s perpetual motion for some people who’ve achieved a level of independence, like Madonna and Jay-Z - they don’t need to do music anymore. But there’s people who need it. And in that need, that’s when it’s tough and it tears you to pieces."

In a previous interview, Lupe said "Im’a always perform until the day I die. It’s just the industry of recorded music doesn’t appeal to me." Although his contract with Atlantic Records includes three more albums, the 25-year-old rapper is willing to take a loss by breaking his contract early.

And how does he expect to get out of his contract?

"There’s renegotiations and all types of other plays and ploys that you can put into effect," he said. "I’ll pay Atlantic back or whatever. It’s like a student loan."

His second album, Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool, was released late in 2007, and landed at No. 15 and sold 250,00 copies thus far, according to Nielsen’s SoundScan.

Though the skate boarding rapper is well-known for his rap posture that is closer to nerd than thug, The Cool centers around cinematic street tales, and Fiasco says he has the experiences to back them up. While he doesn’t glorify guns or project himself as a scowling gangster, Fiasco said using weapons was part of staying alive in the ghetto.

"When the gangbangers would try to pull it, I was like, ‘Yo, I will f*ck you up," he said. "And if you wanna call your cousin, call him. I’ll call me! I’ll call me right now.’ We were shooting TEC-9s when we were babies, so the whole gangsta image, that ain’t nothing."

"When I was growing up, there was a crack house next door to us and they were trying to expand," he added. "My father was like, ‘Are you serious?’ He took his gun, walked next door, and said, ‘You’re done,’ while I aimed my gun out of the window. I was 13 or 14 and to see that, a lot of the facade and the upkeep of trying to impress people was eliminated very early for me."
Lupe Fiasco to Leave Music for Literature!
18th January 2008

A shocking news came from Lupe Fiasco when he announced a plan to quit the music industry after releasing another album. The rapper who had just dropped his second studio album 'The Cool' in December 2007 revealed that he wants to be a literary figure.

Lupe felt that he has to channel more time in doing other things that had been his dream beside making music. He said, "I have one more album in me and then I'm out. I've been doing this music hustle for eights years and have more things I still want to do. There are other ways besides putting out an album that allow me to channel my creative energy and I'm writing a book about a window washer. I will have more than enough to keep me busy."

Lupe had actually revealed his intention to quit music when he said in an interview with Billboard in December 2007 that 'LupEND' will be the title to his third and last album. He said, "'LupEND' - that's going to be my last album's title. When you play a video game, you can only put in three letters for your name and when the game's over, those three letters and 'END' pop up."

Lupe may have to talk to Kanye West and Pharrell Williams about the scheme for he formed a supergroup with the two acclaim artists called Child Rebel Soldier. Lupe said in an interview with Sohh.com that the Hip-Hop group will release a self-titled album in late 2008.
Lupe Fiasco Talks Retirement, "The Industry Of Recorded Music Doesn’t Appeal To Me"!
23rd December 2007

After Jay-Z declared him "a breath of fresh air" and his debut album received three Grammy nods, Lupe Fiasco went back into the studio to create his sophomore offering, The Cool. Lupe talks about his group project with Kanye and Pharrell, why he’s ready for retirement and the reception of new his album.

Having just dropped his sophomore album this week, Lupe Fiasco is characteristically cool. He’s not concerned with album sales and he’s not making any bets. "No, no predictions," he tells. "I feel good though, I feel really good about it. The response from the peoples has been amazing. The reviews have been very, very good. It’s a very well received album so that mission is complete. Now it’s time to see if it sells what everybody is hoping it will sell. I don’t really got no hopes."

Though he has no personal goals for first week sales, Lupe does agree that his album may be one of the best of 2007. "Yeah, I wouldn’t say best, but good. Definitely in the running even outside of hip-hop."

On The Cool Lupe touches on various taboo subjects. On "Intruder Alert" he addresses the subject of rape, and on the highly criticized "Gotta Eat" he rhymes from the perspective of a cheeseburger.

"It’s called imagination," he says in defense of the songs premise. "You should use it. The song is really about health. The hook is ‘My man says feed me feed me when @#*$%s gotta eat that’s when sh-t gets greasy.’ You look at the health situation in the hoods and it’s just bad. There’s no Whole Foods. There’s no nutrition. Nobody is vegetarians. It’s cheeseburgers and steak sandwiches. We’re slowing killing ourselves of heart disease and all that. If the bullets don’t get you the diabetes will. It was basically just making that statement so that people can start having the conversation."

Lupe is already looking towards the release of his third and final LP. "One more… LupEnd is what it’s actually called," he told. Im’a always perform until the day I die. It’s just the industry of recorded music doesn’t appeal to me. That dream of getting a record deal and all that is lost. I woke up from it. But in between time, in the meantime, you’ll probably get a CRS album. But yeah, one more full length solo debut LP."

CRS, which stands for Child Rebel Soldiers, refers to the group that Lupe formed with fellow rappers/producers Kanye West and Pharrell Williams.

"We had the one record," he jokes. "The US Placers record with Tom Yorke and actually my girl Vashtie just did a dope video for that. It’s pretty fresh. We’re about, like, no songs deep. One song deep, a lot of ideas, a lot of conversations about how we want to roll out and what we want it to look like, what we want it to feel like. So we’re in discussion right now but hopefully end of 08, we’ll have something proper."

With so much talk of retirement in rap these days it’s easy to question whether or not LupEnd will actually be the end for Fiasco. He assures us that it will. "Nah, if I go I’ma go. I just want to make sure I leave behind a legacy."

Lupe Fiasco Forecasts 'Cool' For October!
1st May 2007

Rapper Lupe Fiasco will hit the studio this week to begin recording his sophomore album, "The Cool." The artist told Billboard.com backstage at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival over the weekend that he is hoping for an Oct. 31 release date for the album via 1st & 15th/Atlantic.

Reiterating his desire to round up members of Pink Floyd to make a guest appearance on the project, Fiasco conceded, "Nothing has developed yet. But once the stew gets swirling and people start talking, you never know. I hope it does work out."

"The Cool" will be the follow-up to last year's "Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor," which earned three Grammy nominations. Between studio sessions, Fiasco will break away for performances at Lollapalooza in Chicago in early August and the Bumbershoot festival in Seattle in early September.

He has also recently worked with Japanese rapper Big O on the track "City Wings," a remix of Musiq's "Buddy" and on a track from Atlantic labelmate Kevin Michaels' upcoming debut.

There's also a"top secret" project in the works with "another superstar rapper and someone who is a rapper/producer," but Fiasco declined to reveal details, including whether the pairing was for a full album or just a handful of songs.
Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco And Pharrell To Release Supergroup Album!
3rd July 2007

Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco and producer Pharrell Williams could be releasing their first collective album as soon next year - if they ever find time to get together in the studio.

Hip-hop star Fiasco has been friends with West since their early days in the rap underground, and after the positive reaction to their collaboration with The Neptunes producer Williams on the mixtape track Us Placers earlier this year, the trio plan to release a full record as a supergroup.

He says, "It’s a little project that me, Kanye, and Skateboard P (Williams) sat down and was like, ’Yo let’s do a group.’ Us Placers, was the first record we came out with. Now we sitting down deciding if we really going to go hard or not, but we working on some surprises. It depends what it sounds like. We gotta make some more records. Everybody is mad busy, Kanye is doing his record, Pharrell’s in the studio, I’m working on my record, so we gonna wait til everything settles down some."

The trio have so far been referred to as Child Rebel Soldier in the media, but the reports are unconfirmed.

Lupe Fiasco’s "Food & Liquor" Debuts at #1!
2nd October 2006

After having his album leaked early, Lupe Fiasco’s Food and Liquor is #1 on the Billboard Top Rap Albums chart.

The record, which is currently being fueled by Lupe’s latest single "Daydreamin" featuring Jill Scott, is also #2 on the Hip Hop/R&B albums chart and # 8 on the Billboard Top 200, after selling over 80,000 copies in its first week on the shelves. Due to an error in album sales reporting from Best Buy stores nation wide, the final numbers were only made available by SoundScan today (September 29). Before the error was corrected, the album was charted lower than expected, which drew some criticism for the Chicago MC.

The chart topping set, which also features the hit "Kick,Push" and the Neptunes-produced "I Gotcha" is executive produced by Jay-Z and features production by hip hop heavyweights Kanye West, Needlez and Mike Shinoda of LinkinPark.

In related news, Lupe was recently nominated for a "Breaking Woodie" award, which will be given to the year’s Best Emerging Artist at the upcoming mtvU Woodie Awards, set to be held on October 25th at New York’s Roseland Ballroom.
